Unfortunately, we just had a massive heat wave, I think most places felt it to some extent or another, but here it was hitting 108-110 every day when the normal temperature for us should have been 15-20 degrees cooler. Before the heat wave, we were low on rain, so it turned into a full fledged drought.
The heat was too much for many of my plants. It took 3 heirloom tomato plants, which wasn’t a surprise, I really don’t think they are suited to our climate zone. I wasn’t particularly happy with their flavor, so it wasn’t that much of a loss. The heat also killed a bell pepper, all of the corn, both cucumber plants, a jalepeno pepper and has done a lot of damage to the cherry tomatoes, roma tomatoes, beefsteak, celebrity and early girl tomatoes. I am not sure how many will survive as it is, but I am still trying to save some of them.
The remaining plants are: mint (it is alive, but looking stringy), a second run of strawberries (they are alive but clinging to dear life) a relatively healthy looking blueberry, healthy red pepper plant, and grapes. I fully expect some of the damaged tomatoes to survive as long as we don’t have another drought, but that doesn’t mean they will be producing any amount of fruit this year.
